Caspi et al. (2014) – “We examined the structure of psychopathology” “we found evidence pointing to one general underlying dimension that summarized individuals’ propensity to develop any and all forms of common psychopathologies. Higher scores on this dimension were associated with more life impairment, greater familiality, worse developmental histories, and more compromised early-life brain function”
“At the level of the population, this General Psychopathology factor reflects the epidemiological reality that psychiatric disturbance tends to unfold across years of development as persistent and comorbid. At the level of the individual, this factor reflects meaningful differences between persons on a single dimension that represents the tendency to experience psychiatric problems as persistent and comorbid.”
“Here we have coined the term p factor to represent this dimension of General Psychopathology, in recognition that it conceptually parallels a dimension already familiar in behavioral science: the g factor, or general intelligence.”” We propose that p influences present/absent performance on hundreds of psychiatric symptoms, which are typically aggregated into dozens of distinct diagnoses, which further aggregate into two overarching Externalizing versus Internalizing domains, which finally aggregate into one normally distributed dimension of psychopathology from low to high: p.”
Laceulle & Ormel (2015) – “Our results confirmed the existence of a general psychopathology factor underlying all symptoms of psychopathology.”
“the general psychopathology factor should be interpreted as characterizing the overall severity of psychopathology”
“higher scores on the general factor may not only indicate an increased risk for developing a mental disorder, but also that the general factor correlates more strongly with personality, life impairment, developmental history, and brain integrity”
“this can have different causes. One possibility is that all forms of psychopathology, to some extent, share a common etiology. Another alternative is that the factor represents dynamic processes in which one dimension raises the risk of developing another disorder or dimension” “Another alternative is that the general factor reflects distress”
Caspi et al. (2023) – “p is a developmental life-course phenomenon. Higher p is associated with early onset, persistence, and cumulative diversity of mental disorders, from age 11 to age 45”[en waarschijnlijk langer, maar hun data gingen niet verder dan leeftijd 45]
“elevated levels of chronic inflammation were equally apparent across all three psychopathology dimensions”
“inflammation, which has been thought to underlie many cases of depression (Bullmore, 2018) but which it now turns out may promote, or be promoted by, many other disorders”
Overlap tussen psychische en neurologische aandoeningen:
Migraine en psychiatrische aandoeningen:
- Hamelsky & Lipton (2006) – “Migraine is consistently associated with several
psychiatric disorders” p. 1332
“In longitudinal studies, the evidence supports a bidirectional relationship between migraine and depression, with each disorder increasing the risk of the other disorder.” p. 1327
doi: 10.1111/j.1526-4610.2006.00576.x - Minen et al. (2016) – “a review of the literature demonstrates the wide variety of psychiatric comorbidities with migraine”
doi: 10.1136/jnnp-2015-312233 - Preeti et al. (2024) – “The prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders in migraine patients is very high.” “70.5% had a psychiatric comorbidity.”
doi: 10.4103/ipj.ipj_60_23
Epilepsie en psychiatrische aandoeningen:
- Mula et al. (2021) – “People with epilepsy have a 2–5 times increased risk of developing any psychiatric disorder”
doi: 10.1212/CPJ.0000000000000874
Dementie en psychiatrische aandoeningen:
- Mo et al. (2023) – “The findings of this cohort study that patients with dementia had markedly increased risks of psychiatric disorders both before and after dementia diagnosis highlight the significance of incorporating psychiatric preventative and management interventions for individuals with dementia across various diagnostic stages.”
doi: 10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2023.38080
“Ook lichamelijke aandoeningen overlappen vaak met hersenaandoeningen.”
- Zhuang et al. (2017) – “depression patients were at higher risk for diabetes … han non-depressive subjects.” “patients with diabetes were at higher risk for diabetes … than non-diabetic subjects. The available data supports that the relationships between diabetes and depression are bidirectional and the overall strengths are similar in both directions.”
doi: 10.4082/kjfm.2018.39.3.137 - Bala et al. (2025) – “We provide evidence of bidirectional causal association between MDD [major depressive disorder] and T2D [type 2 diabetes], with MDD strongly predicting insulin resistance and T2D. T2D predicted both MDD and TRD” [treatment resistant depression]
doi: 10.1038/s41380-025-03083-0 - Joyce et al. (2024) – “Hypertension at midlife has a significant negative impact on cognition in mid-life and later life”
doi: 10.1097/HJH.0000000000003614 - Forte et al. (2022) – “in young adults” “cardiometabolic risk factors, such as blood pressure and body mass index, were associated … with mental health”
doi: 10.3390/jcm11071999 - Penninx & Lange (2018) – “The risk of MetS [metabool syndroom: overgewicht, hoge bloeddruk, ongunstige cholesterolwaardes] is increased in a range of psychiatric patients.” “A likely multitude of factors interact, including iatrogenic effects of psychotropic medication, an unhealthy lifestyle, poorer medical care of psychiatric patients, and genetic and pathophysiological vulnerability.” p. 70
doi: 10.31887/DCNS.2018.20.1/bpenninx
- Sparling et al. (2017) – “A total of twenty-four articles of different designs were included, representing 14 262 subjects. We extracted data on study population, depression prevalence, nutrients examined, deficiency prevalence, timing of assessment, reporting, analysis strategy and adjustment factors. In all, fourteen studies found associations of perinatal depression with lower levels of folate, vitamin D, Fe, Se, Zn, and fats and fatty acids, while two studies found associations between perinatal depression and higher nutrient levels, and eight studies found no evidence of an association.”
doi: 10.1017/jns.2017.58
- Cortés-Albornos et al. (2021) – “We concluded that inadequate nutrient intake during pregnancy was associated with brain defects (diminished cerebral volume, spina bifida, alteration of hypothalamic and hippocampal pathways), an increased risk of abnormal behavior, neuropsychiatric disorders (ASD, ADHD, schizophrenia, anxiety, depression), altered cognition, visual impairment, and motor deficits.”
